    striking 100 000 a million or 100 million coins so that when full production actually started we ran into many problems with the dies and they had to be reworked several times to eliminate die cracking and to get the metal to flow properly so that the entire design would fill in Because we found that the coin would fill in at 75 to 85 tons of pressure where the Ike dollar filled in at about 190 tons we thought that we would get much longer die life This has not proved to be true The metallic make up of the new coin has been changed and it has a higher nickel con tent in the outer layers This gives a more pleasing and brilliant appearance than pre vious clad coinage however we found that the added nickel content made the blanks so much harder that even though we were stamping them
