Eliza Johnson
Biography
Born as Eliza McCardie in Greeneville, Tennessee. Married Andrew Johnson on May 17, 1827, at age 16. They had three sons and two daughters.
She suffered from poor health and did little as First Lady. The social duties of the presidency were hosted by Martha Johnson Patterson, their daughter. Eliza died of tuberculosis in Greeneville, Tennessee.
She appears on the “First Spouse” $10 gold coin and corresponding bronze medal released May 5, 2011. The obverse was designed by Joel Iskowitz and sculpted by Don Everhart. Reverse was designed by Gary Whitely and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill..
