John S. Ormsby
Born in Pittsburgh, brother of William. He received M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. Married Jane Hindman in 1838. They had two daughters and a son.
He was caught up in the Gold Rush of 1849 and moved from Philadelphia to California settling in Sacramento. He and his brother struck coins via the J. S. Ormsby Company. Their mint was located on K street in Sacramento. He continued to practice medicine in Sacramento. Ormsby was elected to the California legislature in 1858. He followed the gold rush into Nevada and moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. He died at the home of his son in Logan, Utah.Source credit: Pete Smith, American Numismatic Biographies
