William M. Ormsby
Born in Greenville, Pennsylvania. Brother rarried Margaret A. Trumbo July 1, 1844.
He went to California from Pennsylvania with his brother in 1849. He was a partner in the J. S. Ormsby Company striking gold coins. He went into Nevada and was prominent in the organization of Nevada Territory. He built a hotel in Carson City, Nevada in 1858. Ormsby County, Nevada was named after him.
As a Major he led a force of 105 men against the Pah Ute (Piaute) Indians at Winnemucca, Nevada. They were under the leadership of Chiquito Winnemucca (Black Rock Tom). On May 12, 1860, Major Ormsby and about 60 others were killed.Source credit: Pete Smith, American Numismatic Biographies
