James Melvin Peed

Born in Washington, North Carolina. Served in U.S. Army 1963-1966. Attended the Corcoran School of Art in 1969, Northern Virginia Community College 1971-72 and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1973. Employed as manager of the graphics group for the U.S. Mint.
He won the competition to design the 1986 Vietnam Veterans National Medal. A sketch by Peed modified by Mercanti was used as the design for the $10 Olympic gold eagle of 1984. Peed designed the reverse of the 1992 Olympic $5 gold half eagle.
