Graduate of the University of Mississippi. Divorced with two daughters. Co-founder of Professional Coin Grading Service in 1986. Full time coin dealer after 1973. Director of research for PCGS. Author of The Official Guide to Coin Grading and Counterfeit Detection. This was an NLG Book of the Year. Author of Early U. S. Gold Coin Varieties, a Study of Die States, 1795-1834. Author of United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: GOLD, another NLG Book of the Year. Author with Jeff Garrett of: Auction Records: U. S. He is a member of the Rittenhouse Society. Named ANA Numismatist of the Year in 2007. In 2015 he was inducted into the PCGS CoinFacts Hall of Fame. In 2022 he received the NLG Clemy Award.
In 2021 he was on the Coin World list of The Most Influential People in Numismatics 1960-2020. He made the list again in 2022, 2023 and 2024.
