George L. Davis

Biography

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He entered his father's textile machinery business. He began collecting coins about 1870. He bought colonials and large cents from the Crosby collection sale in 1882. He bought extensively from Haseltine's type collection in 1883.

Upon his death, the collection was stored in a vault in North Andover, Massachusetts. It was next opened in October 1953. The collection was acquired by Stacks and sold at auction April 8-10, 1954, as part of the Davis/ Graves sale.
