Reverse Description: Bison or “buffalo” standing on mound facing left. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above at border, E PLURIBUS UNUM beneath in small letters. FIVE CENTS on mound below. General Notes: 1913 Five-Cent Piece. Listed as J-1789a prior to the 8th edition. Four were struck on oversize planchets to see what the design would look like if moved farther in from the rim, as requested by the Hobbs Manufacturing Co., which was developing a coin-detecting device for use in vending machines. The large planchets allowed the use of regular dies, thus saving the expense of cutting new hubs and dies.16 Two are in the Smithsonian Institution, one was melted, the fourth went to Secretary of the Treasury Franklin MacVeagh.
