A quill pen, a sheaf of parchment, and the words WE THE PEOPLE are depicted on the obverse. The reverse portrays a cross-section of Americans from various periods representing contrasting lifestyles. A modernistic design by Marcel Jovine was selected for the five-dollar gold coin. The obverse portrays a stylized eagle holding a 322 COMMEMORATIVES federal issues massive quill pen. Another large quill pen is featured on the reverse. To the left are nine stars, signifying the first colonies that ratified the Constitution.
