Obverse Description: Bust of Abraham Lincoln framed by IN GOD WE TRUST on the top periphery. The word LIBERTY to the left of the portait and the date postioned on the right side.
Reverse Description: Lincoln memorial building centered with words ONE CENT, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on top and bottom periphery. E PLURIBUS UNUM centered above the top of the memorial.
General Notes: Most 1981 proof cents are of the Type 1 variety, showcasing a closed S mintmark that was also used on 1979 Type 2 and 1980 proof Lincoln cents. However, later in 1981 US Mint officials retooled the S mintmark punches for its proof coins, creating an extremely clear S mintmark with bulbous serifs. Arppximately 10% of all 1981-S proof Lincoln cents were struck with the Type 2 mintmark, and these are much scarcer than Type 1 proofs.
