This piece features the A and M of AMERICA on the reverse very close together, with the bottoms of those two letters virtually touching each other. As the 1992-D Close AM Lincoln cents feature the reverse used on regular production 1993 pennies, it is theorized that the 1992-D Close AM cents were struck as trials to test the new reverse dies.
