Elizabeth “Bessie” Coleman

Biography

Born in Atlanta, Texas. She was the first African-American woman to earn a pilot’s license. Unable to attend American flight schools, she received her training in France. She was killed during a training flight at Jacksonville, Florida.

She appears on the 2023 American Women quarter dollar.
