    ferring to the 10 coins only as the High Relief double eagles were widely known to be worth a substantial premium at the time but the eagles were almost com pletely unknown outside of numismatic circles When one of the 50 eagles goes on the auction block these days it will hammer between 100 000 and 250 000 depending on condition Friday February 14 1908 I sold one of my rare eagles to henry chapman for 150 and made 140 pretty soft Henry Chapman and his brother Samuel Hudson Chapman of Philadel phia PA were each members of the ANA board of governors A list collectors dealers and numismatic auctioneers they also gave a hand in advancing the Federal Charter Monday February 17 1908 Bought a number of coins today and am greatly inter ested in coinology Wednesday February 19

    pedigreed coin in America and is one of the outstanding pieces in his remarkable collection of United States coins The pedigree of this splendid coin dates back to May 9th 1843 when it was purchased from the cabinet of the U S Mint by Mr Matthew Stickney of Salem Mass It remained in the Stickney Collection until after his death in 1894 and was finally sold at auc tion for his estate by henry chapman of Philadelphia in 1907 It thus remained in the possession of Mr Stickney and his daugh ters for 64 years It was purchased at the Chapman auction for 3 600 by Col James W Ellsworth of New York In 1923 I bought the entire collection of Col Ellsworth and Mr Atwater acquired the Stickney Dol lar as well as many other rare pieces from me The letters reproduced in this pamphlet speak for

    hich issued these trial pieces is not known but it may have been one of those companies which planned to issue coins but for one reason or another did not The only known specimen was discovered about 1916 by Dr J M Henderson who claimed he bought it from a lady who had owned it for forty years having been given it by her father who so far as she knew never was in California Evidently henry chapman of Philadelphia acquired the piece from Dr Henderson and subsequently traded it to Waldo Newcomer California Model Series No information is available on these small coins except for their date 1849 Since they are much smaller than other private issue of the same denominations they may never have been intended for circulation 84
