November 11, 1911. Mail Auction. 1712 Lots. No plates. Catalogue of the Collection of Rare Coins of Mr. Charles W. Cowell, Denver, Colorado. Mehl wrote: “Mr. Chas. W. Cowell, now past his seventieth year, is one of the very first numismatists of this country and one of the ‘Pioneer’ collectors of the Pioneer gold coins, of which his collection is so rich in many of the greatest gems of this most interesting series.” While regrettably not plated, this is perhaps the first highly important Mehl sale offering exceptional Federal and territorial gold coins. Lot 708 is noteworthy for its census of 13 known 1855 Kellogg fifty-dollar gold pieces. The Cowell sale realized a total of $12,717.89.
