Walking Liberty Half Dollar Proofs, the 20th Century's Most Underappreciated and Undervalued Series

(2020)

Multi-Media Summary

This presentation will discuss the origin of Adolf Weinman's famous (to this day) obverse, and note the annual mintage of Walking Liberty Proofs, some of the lowest in all of the 20th Century. In 1936, a mere 3,901 pieces were struck. The entire seven-year production was just 74,400, yet high-grade Walker proofs are relatively affordable. Major varieties are not even recognized by PCGS, or in the Cherry Pickers Guide, 6th Edition, Vol 1. The 1941 "No-AW" is a prime example. Confusion reigns! We'll examine each year's production with photos of the coins/variety and what to look for when considering a purchase. Presenting: Will Cadence, numismatist since age 6. This presentation was part of the 2020 Newman Numismatic Portal Symposium, held virtually, August 28-30, 2020.
