A New Constellation: Nova Constellatio Copper Tokens and the Birth of the Republic

(2020)

Multi-Media Summary

A common metaphor to describe the newly independent United States was "a new constellation." Robert Morris used the phrase, in Latin, on his proposed coinage for the newly independent states. It later turned up on copper tokens, struck in England for use in America. This presentation ties together the metaphor, the proposed coinage, and the copper tokens and describes their relationship to the birth of the republic. Presenting: Franklin Noel, an early American copper enthusiast who also dabbles in other areas of numismatics. This presentation was part of the 2020 Newman Numismatic Portal Sympsosium, held virtually, August 28-30, 2020.
