Book Summary

Frossard, Ed. MONOGRAPH OF UNITED STATES CENTS AND HALF CENTS ISSUED BETWEEN THE YEARS 1793 AND 1857: TO WHICH IS ADDED A TABLE OF THE PRINCIPAL COINS, TOKENS, JETONS, MEDALETS, PATTERNS OF COINAGE AND WASHINGTON PIECES, GENERALLY CLASSIFIED UNDER THE HEAD OF COLONIAL COINS. A CONTRIBUTION TO THE NUMISMATIC HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES. Irvington: Published by the Author, 1879. Crown 4to, modern full dark brown morocco, gilt; spine with two raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; marbled endpapers; original gilt-printed blue paper front cover bound in. 58, (2) pages; 9 heliotype plates with tissue guards [7 plates with numbers and ligatures added in ink]. A plastic sleeve bound in at the end holds a copy of Frossard's January 3, 1879 catalogue of the George Merritt collection, the coins from which provided many of the illustrations in Frossard's book. Fine or nearly so. Number 110 of 300 printed. A classic work, the first book-length treatise on the entire series of large cents and half cents. Frossard took the opportunity presented by his January 3, 1879 sale of the George Merritt collection to compile this work, illustrating it with coins from Merritt's collection as well as from that of Lorin G. Parmelee. The book is a good overview of both series and one of the earliest to deal with die varieties for dates past 1794. Of considerable historical importance. Davis 400. Ex Jim Neiswinter Library.
