Book Summary
4to, original full crimson morocco, both sides bordered and paneled with double gilt fillets, with gilt thistles in corners and the Royal Arms of Scotland in the centers; spine with five raised bands, ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt; board edges ruled in gilt; intricate gilt inner dentelles; top page edges gilt; marbled endpapers. (2), viii, (9)-146 pages; errata leaf; 44 + 4 lithographic plates of coins, some heightened in colors indicative of their metallic content, each accompanied by a leaf of descriptive text. Extremities just a trifle rubbed, else fine. An exceptional copy of this important catalogue, based on the author's superb collection of Scottish coins. According to the half-title verso: "Of this book only 150 copies have been printed, and no further impression of the plates can be taken, as they have been all rubbed off the stone." A few copies were superbly bound in green full morocco and apparently, as here, fewer still were similarly bound in red morocco. Manville 448. Sigler 2837. Ex John Bergman Library (Kolbe Sale 85, lot 354); ex Ruanne Smith Library (Kolbe Sale 95, lot 55).
