Newell, Edward
Born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Graduate of Yale with A.B. in 1907 and A.M. in 1909. Married Adra Nelson Marshall April 22, 1909. Served as first lieutenant in military intelligence in the Army 1917 to 1918. He served on the Assay Commission for 1919. As a man of independent means, he devoted his life to the study of numismatics. He received the Archer M. Huntington Award Medal in 1918. He left $50,000 to the ANS as a fund to purchase coins. He also donated 127,000 items to the ANS collection.
He published several books on topics related to ancient numismatics. He was an active member of the ANS. He was elected to the council in 1910 and served as 12th ANS President from January 28, 1916, to February 18, 1941.
Newell served as president of the New York Numismatic Club 1934 through 1936. The club honored him with one of their presidential medals in 1940. The design was by J. M. Swanson. There was one piece struck in platinum, 11 in nickel, 16 in silver, and 34 in bronze. He died on Long Island. In 1969 he was elected to the ANA Numismatic Hall of Fame.

Displaying records 1 — 4The Dated Alexander Coinage of Sidon and Ake
4to, original blue cloth, gilt. 72 pages; 10 very fine plates of coins with tissue guards. The entire catalogue section of the volume is interleaved with blank sheets, which the author has used for extensive annotations germane to the facing printed page (see comments). Additional annotations are made directly to the printed text and, in one case, to the plates. One sheet of notes laid in. Near fine. The author’s own copy of the very scarce original edition of this important study, featuring fine photographically printed coin plates. Edward T. Newell (1886–1941) remains perhaps this country’s greatest classical numismatist, and his writing continues to be enormously influential. Newell had this copy interleaved, and used the resulting volume not only to record examples of these coins present in his own collection (though this record is of considerable value, often providing provenances and other information otherwise easily lost), but of pieces he encountered in other collections and institutional holdings. He also used the volume to record corrections, additions, and other revisions. It is not an exaggeration to state that Newell updated this volume throughout the rest of his life: auction records are given as late as 1936. Weights of individual examples are meticulously recorded, and Newell updated provenances of those pieces cited in the printed text when ownership had changed (most frequently noting that ownership was “now E.T.N.”) All told, there are 26 added pages with handwritten annotations, 20 printed pages with handwritten additions or corrections, one small piece of paper laid in with handwritten notes, and one coin plate on which a depicted coin is indicated by Newell as “fourrée.” A unique and most interesting copy of a scarce and notable Newell publication. One of only 300 copies printed. Yale Oriental Series, Researches Volume II. Clain-Stefanelli 2346. Daehn 3440. Kroh 24: “one of the earliest specialized die-studies ... still very valid and much utilized.”
The Coinage Of Demetrius Poliorcetes
Newell, Edward T. THE COINAGE OF DEMETRIUS POLIORCETES. First edition. London: Oxford University Press, 1927. 4to, original tan cloth-backed boards; printed title label. ix, (3), 174, (2) pages; 18 very fine plates of coins. Damp-stained throughout; a reference copy only. One of Newell’s finest publications. The original edition is far superior to the reprint. Clain-Stefanelli 2356*. Daehn 3447: “A detailed study of the coinage of Demetrious the Beseiger... All known varieties in bronze, silver, and gold are described and illustrated.” Kroh 26 (five stars): “a die-study still utilized as the standard reference.” Ex William A. Burd Library.
