Born in New York City. Married to Joanne C. Owner of Jade House Publications.
He began collecting coins about 1949 and became interested in tokens and medals in 1960. Served as president of the Token and Medal Society and the Civil War Token Society. Member of the Numismatic Literary Guild. He received the TAMS Medal of Merit in 1985.
Schenkman was editor of the Copperhead Courier 1975 to 1980. Co-author of "Exonumia Notebook," a regular feature in The Numismatist 1977 to 1981. Editor of A Survey of American Trade Tokens in 1975. It was a collection of articles previously published in The Numismatist. He contributed “World of Exonumia” to Coin World August 7, 1985 to 1988 and “Token Topics” to Numismatic News after January 9, 1996. Editor of the TAMS Journal after 1982. Book editor for TAMS.
He was named a Numismatic News Numismatic Ambassador in 1994. Instructor at ANA Summer Seminar. He received the ANA Glenn Smedley Memoriam Award in 2003, the Medal of Merit in 2007, Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012 and Farran Zerbe Memorial Award in 2013. In 2004 he was inducted into the CWTS Hall of Fame and in 2015 into the ANA Hall of Fame. In 2023 he was on the Coin World list of 100 Most Influential People in Numismatics.
Author of Tokens and Medals Commemorating the Battle Between the Monitor and the Merrimac in 1979. Author of Virginia Tokens in 1980. Author of Merchant Tokens of Washington issued in 1982. Author of Civil War Sutler Tokens and Cardboard Scrip, Explosive Control Tokens, Bimetallic Trade Tokens of the United States, Maryland Merchant Tokens. His book Merchant Tokens of Hard Rubber and Similar Compositions was published in 1992. Twenty-five signed numbered bound editions were offered at $85.
