Born and died at Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He started dealing in 1878. He published The Coin Journal in April 1878 and irregularly after. He published Numismatic News beginning in 1895. He was ANA member number 74 and a member of the New York Numismatic Club. For many years he served as counterfeit detector for the ANA.
He issued fixed price lists 1885 to 1911. They were numbered up to 71 with several supplements. He conducted 71 auction sales 1881 to 1910. One of the best was the collection of William S. Appleton May 21-22, 1907.
Steigerwalt collected antiques and stamps but was not a stamp dealer. He was a member of the American Philatelic Society and the Philadelphia Stamp Club.
