4to, contemporary brown quarter morocco with marbled sides; spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt; two red morocco spine labels, gilt; mottled endpapers; original printed front card cover bound in; silk marker. cccvii, (1), 238, (2) pages; title printed in red and black; frontispiece portrait; a few text figures; 13 lithographic plates of coins. Minor general wear to binding and pastedowns; tear to card cover and following blank; marginal worming toward rear of volume. Very good or better. An impressive, encyclopedic work of over 500 pages total. Robert I. Nesmith, in his essay in José Toribio Medina, Humanist of the Americas, writes, “In 1902 appeared one of his most important numismatic works, Las Monedas Chilenas, also printed on the author’s press. It is an exhaustive treatment of Chilean coinage from the opening of the first mint in Santiago, under Philip V, to the end of the nineteenth century.” Sarah Elizabeth Roberts agrees, adding that, “A history of the foundation of the mints in Latin America, biographies of Spanish monarchs during whose reign money was issued, a history of Chile after the revolution began, and biographies of engravers are included. There are 238 pages of documents” (José Toribio Medina, His Life and Works). 300 copies were originally printed, according to Chiappa and Feliú Cruz, a figure that has been echoed by most other bibliographers; this seems high, though it is perhaps the case that copies would be more likely to remain in Chile than with some of Medina’s more wide-ranging titles. Regardless, we last offered a copy in 2012. Behar 3517. Burzio Centenario 38. Chiappa 137. Clain-Stefanelli 8601*. Grierson 215. Mateu y Llopis 311. Roberts 151–152. Schaible 115.
Bibliografia numismatica colonial hispano-americana
This work forms bibliographical catalog of printed works related to the numismatic history of colonial Spanish America. Medina outlines the development of coinage systems from the early colonial period through the independence movements of the 19th century. The book includes detailed descriptions of legislative documents, royal decrees, and other publications that shaped the monetary policies of Spanish colonies. By documenting both rare and significant texts, Medina provides an important resource for the study of colonial coinage and its legal, economic, and cultural implications, emphasizing the critical role of numismatics in understanding the broader colonial history of Latin America.
Las Monedas Coloniales De Chile
4to, contemporary red quarter Spanish calf; spine with five raised bands, ruled and lettered in gilt.
Las Medallas Del Almirante Vernon
4to [30 by 22.5 cm], later brown quarter morocco with maroon cloth sides; spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt; red morocco spine label, gilt; speckled page edges; decorative endpapers with cloth hinges; original printed card covers bound in. Frontispiece portrait of Vernon; (2), xxii, 110, (2) pages; halftone text illustrations of medals. Fine. A particularly fresh copy of this rare work, of which only 100 copies were printed. Until the modern work published by John W. Adams and Fernando Chao, this was the best work on this fascinating and extensive series. Adams has praised Medina's work for its balanced presentation of the historical background to these medals, stating that more than any other author on the Vernon series up to this point, Medina immersed himself in relevant primary sources. Behar 3521. Clain-Stefanelli 14694. Gresham (Roberts) MNR-9, estimating that ten or fewer copies are still extant (probably a touch low). Mateu y Llopis 334. Schaible 259.
