Its aim was to include all of “the reliably or persuasively identified portraits of over 150 Greek poets, philosophers, orators, statesmen, generals and artists; and the extant portraits—on coins and in sculpture—of Hellenistic rulers, ending with the Greeks of the Roman period. Among the famous Greeks whose portraits are listed and reproduced are the poets Homer, Sappho, Aischylos, Sophokles, Euripides, Aristophanes and Menander; the philosophers Sokrates, Plato, Aristotle, Diogenes and Epikouros; the orator Demosthenes, and many others.” Scarce.
