Hacksilber

Means cut or chopped silver and is a term used by German numismatic writers to indicate the cut and fragmentary coins which constitute a part of a "find." The buried treasure dating from the tenth to the twelfth centuries frequently consists of silver in bars or cakes with a mixture of both cut and perfect coins.
