occluded gas

Gas bubbles trapped in the ingot at cooling and solidifying. Most will escape when the ingot is rolled into strip; blanks cut from such metal will show lamination defects from the bubbles' breaking, but occasionally bubbles too small or too deeply buried to escape that way will remain, producing a dumb blank.
