Band
Band. A wide rim; a plain molded border on a numismatic item. Bands may be flat or oblique – slanted. Bands aid in reducing wear and act as a picture frame for the design. The U.S. Franklin half dollar has such a wide band rim. If the designer widens the band to its extreme – wide enough to contain lettering as the legend – it is known as a cartwheel rim. See border.
