Bearded. Facial hair on male portraits, it is as important to identify the individual as any other facial characteristic. When a coin or medal bears a portrait with a beard
it should be noted in describing the piece. If the subject normally bears a beard, any portrait without this is termed unbearded (often of youthful monarchs before maturity, or Abraham Lincoln before 1861).
