Broken Tracer
Broken Tracer. A mechanical error of the transfer press or pantograph die engraver where the tracing point breaks after the cutting of the die is once started. Part of the die will be cut correctly – that closest to the center or starting point – and part incorrectly – the outer part of the design. The outer part generally shows a doubling of lettering and detail. This occurred on the Galen Medal in the Medical Series struck by Medallic Art Company. Unfortunately it was not noticed until several were struck. The dieshell was replaced in the pantograph and a correct die was cut.
