Canton

Canton.  A quarter of a design; in decorations of honor it is an area formed between the arms of a cross. While a term of heraldry – where it also indicates a quarter section of a shield – it specifically indicates the area where rays or eagles or other design is placed, in the angles between the arms of the cross.
