Flakes, Flaking

Flakes, Flaking.  A thin surface layer of metal peeling away or off of a coin, particularly a clad coin, or from a die. See laminating error. An impressed object is said to flake off if it is removed from its surface position.  See impressed design, impressed error, dropped letter.
