Flat Engraving

Flat Engraving.  Cutting a surface for lettering or ornamentation without modulated relief; inscribing. Flat engraving is usually placed on an existing medallic (or metallic) object, as to customize it or personalize it. Such engraving is incised and can be done either by hand or machine.  Flat engraving in other fields is called copperplate engraving for prints, banknote engraving for paper money, certificates and other printed pieces; and

chalk engraving, drypoint, intaglio, mezzotint, stipple-engraving, relief engraving, all for prints.  See engraving. inscribing.
