Form Letters.  Preformed three-dimensional letters placed by a sculptor on his model or background plate for the lettering. He can model these himself, or obtain from an outside source. They aid in positioning the lettering and reduce the time to carve each separately, however more experienced sculptors prefer to model the letters in a style harmonious with the total design of the work. Also most preformed letters do not have the proper bevel (15% draft preferred) on their sides, if they have straight vertical forms they are unsuitable for medallic work. Form letters are not to be confused with template letters, used in machine engraving.
