Friction

Friction.  A collectors' term for repeated wear on a particular area of a numismatic item. Also called friction marks. Ser also CABINET FRICTION.

Frosted Surface.  The area on a proof finish piece that is not reflective, but is matte and looks "frosted." A frosted surface is created with hydrochloric acid or other matting solution, sandblasting or methods and is applied to that area of a die before the proof area is proof polished. It use in design is for contrast to the highly reflective proof finish.  See reflectiveness.
