Gardant

Gardant.  A side view portrait of a subject looking back over a shoulder to show a face to the viewer. A medal of the Columbian Exposition shows Columbus in such a gardant pose. The term comes from heraldry, where it is usually said of an animal. Compare regardamt.  See heraldry.
