Incongruous
Incongruous. Out of place, not harmonious with intended setting. A term used in numismatic cataloging where a design element is not in agreement with the rest of the design or the theme of the medal. Items of inappropriate location are most often encountered. Frederic H. Betts in the preface of his brother’s book, American Colonial History Illustrated by Contemporary Medals gives examples of a camel shown on a medal of the West Indies (Betts 12), and palm trees on medals of Canada (Betts 385, 386).
