Indexing

Indexing.  The process of bringing a blank into the exact position at every cycle of the press for striking with coining dies. On some coining presses the mechanism that accomplishes this is a large flat circular disk (called an indexing plate) with circular apertures at it's edge. These receive a blank and move it along until it is exactly in place for positioning the blank for striking.
