Lamination

Lamination.  The bonding of two layers of metal, usually of contrasting color for visual effect, as silver laminated to copper, or to reduce the cost of the total blank (by cladding a desired alloy, the lamina, to a lower cost core). The clad strips are bonded during rolling (roll bonding during hot rolling, or explosion bonding – where controlled minute explosions fuse the two metal surfaces together – during cold rolling).  See cladding, bonding.
