Matting

Matting.  The process of minutely roughing up a metallic surface by abrasive blasting, matte dip or matting tools; a frequent process of chasing or finishing. A dull matte finish can be indicated somewhat by lacquering, applying only a light coating of lacquer to a slightly heated medallic item. The action by the operator in any stage of creating a matte surface is called matting down.
