Scroll

Scroll.  A panel with ends curved like paper; on a narrow streamer, ribbon or banderole. Scrolls are often a type of cartouche which are blank in the die (forming a reserve) for later inscribing on the medallic item after it is struck. Scrolls are also an ornamentation of a continuous curved or spiral design.  See border, scrollwork.  Also some medallic items have been trimmed in the shape of a scroll.  See unusual shape.
