Stone

Stone.  A very infrequently used material for modeling. Carved stone, known as solnhofer, were first used for carving models in 16th century in Germany. Stone models were used for coin and medal models in 18th century England. Max Dasio, a Munich medalist, cut models for medals as late as 1908 in boxwood, solnhofer and steatite (a kind of soapstone). He exhibited six of these at the 1910 International Medallic Exhibition at the American Numismatic Society in New York City.
