The illegal creation or alteration of a coin or banknote, modern or historical. A coin, banknote or ingot that is illegally produced to make it appear as genuine. Well made fakes of important collectable coins are a problem today. Major counterfeiters have put thousands of illegal replicas into the numismatic market. These fakes are sold with or without a small COPY stamp on them. Many are skillfully produced using silver of the correct alloy and weight. Some criminals in China have bought surplus U.S. coin presses that the mints were using a century ago to fake coins. Coins are also artificially toned.
