Early Paper Money of America / Massachusetts / 1733 John Merrett

Because of a scarcity of small Province bills and coppers John Merrett who operated Three Sugar Loaves & Canister on King Street in Boston issued bearer notes due on demand. They were designed so that they could be torn in half to pass for smaller amounts. Half bills were announced as redeemable in the August 2, 1733 Boston Weekly Newsletter.
