Alan V. Weinberg comments: National Draft Horse Ass'n. World's Fair Columbian Expo 1893. One of the most aesthetic eye-appealing American gold medals, pre-1900, that I have ever seen. It almost knocks you off your feet. Uniquely constructed and styled: a blank gold central planchet, around which is affixed a separate gold rim. Ultra high relief gold fixtures include different color gold horsehead, Columbian Expo "labels" , ornate fixtures, etc. All different colors gold. Awarded (hand-engraved) to E.D. Hodgson in 1893 by the National French Draft Horse Ass'n (so far as I can discover, massive Clydesdale-type equines meant for heavy pulling). In the original plush-lined leather box of issue. All masterfully hand-made by a jeweler of the time. Curiously, there is no indication of the maker on the medal or box. 58 mm diameter, 67.5 grams (2.381 ozs), appears to be at least.900 fine if not purer gold.
