1866 5C Five Cents, Judd-470, Pollock-562, R.6, PR64+ NGC. CAC. Design. A portrait of George Washington faces right on the obverse, the legend IN GOD WE TRUST above, and the date below. A wreath of laurel on the reverse encloses the so-called Short 5, with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around. Struck in nickel with a plain edge. Commentary. Just after the close of the Civil War, the first president, George Washington, and the late president, Abraham Lincoln, were the two most popular historical figures among coin collectors; the Mint took advantage, featuring both men on pattern nickels in 1866. Physical Description. A few scattered toning specks attesting to its originality are evident on each side of this sharply defined nickel-gray near-Gem. The fields are lightly mirrored with a hint of contrast. Wisps of champagne toning appear at various light angles and add to the eye appeal. From The Eric P. Newman Collection.
