1915-S 50C Panama-Pacific MS67 S NGC. CAC. On January 16, 1915, the 63rd Congress approved the Panama-Pacific International Exposition Coinage Act, authorizing, among other denominations, 200,000 half dollars to be struck at the San Francisco Mint. Section 3 of the Act provided an option for the half dollars to be struck at the Mint exhibit on the exposition grounds, and stipulated that the coins may be melted and reminted for educative purposes. It is unknown if any were actually coined at the exposition. What is known is that these pieces were sold at one dollar each, and that only 27,134 pieces were actually distributed. Many of the pieces were sold to non-collectors, and even those that have been relatively well-cared-for often are uninspiring. That word, however, cannot be applied to this Star-designated Superb Gem in any way. Its elegant underlying luster lights up attractive silver, blue, and green toning with touches of rose.
