1802/1 $1 Wide Date MS64 NGC. CAC. B-2, BB-233, R.3. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The Green-Newman B-2, BB-233 dollar is the finest known for the die marriage, and also the finest known 1802/1 overdate dollar. This near-Gem is a splendid specimen offering fully brilliant satin luster beneath lovely original gold, blue, and violet toning. The slightly reflective obverse shows scattered, trivial marks, and the reverse is nearly flawless. Obverse Die. The obverse dies are rather difficult to differentiate when attributing the 1802/1 silver dollars. The B-2, BB-233 shows a wide date, with more space between the 1 and 8 than between any other digit pairs. Star 1 is about as close to the second curl as star 7 is to the L. The key differentiator, however, is that stars 5-6 are closer than stars 6-7. Reverse Die. The reverse die was used for seven different die marriages, dated 1801, 1802/1, 1802, and 1803. Die State. A faint, slightly curved die line connects the last four stars to the bust. This line might be confused with a die crack, except that it is perfectly straight. Both dies are perfect (as always) showing no lapping, clash marks, or cracks. Condition Census. The Eric Newman coin grading MS64 NGC-CAC is the finest known by a wide margin, the only Mint State B-2, BB-233 known. Among the other 1802/1 overdates, no Mint State examples are known for B-1, BB-231; the top pieces are two coins in AU58. For the B-4, BB-232, two specimens in MS63 are known. For the B-3, BB-234, finest known is an MS60+ coin from the Buddy Ebsen Collection (Superior, June 1987), lot 1922, now in a prominent Texas collection. And finally no Mint State survivors are known for the B-9, BB-235. Appearances. This specimen is illustrated as part of NGC's presentation of the Newman Collection at www.NGCCoin.com. Commentary. Five die pairings are known for the 1802/1 silver dollar. Interestingly, a different obverse die was employed for each one of the five, none of which was used previously to strike 1801-dated silver dollars. The five 1802/1 die marriages are B-1, BB-231; B-4, BB-232; B-2, BB-233; B-3, BB-234; and B-9, BB-235. Collectors of Guide Book varieties will be seeking the 1802/1 Wide Date (B-2, BB-233; B-3, BB-234) and Narrow Date (or Close Date: B-1, BB-231; B-4, BB-232) pairings among the overdates. (The B-9, BB-235 is considered "neither close nor wide," the date digits rather small but well-spaced.) The 1802/1 B-2, BB-233 die marriage is usually found in lower grades. AU specimens are elusive and no Mint State examples appear in either edition of Bowers' reference. Atop the Condition Census in Bowers' second edition is the Eliasberg coin in AU58, now in the Dale Friend Collection of early dollars. Four AU50 coins follow the Eliasberg-Friend example. Provenance.
