1802 $1 Narrow Date MS61+ NGC. CAC. B-6, BB-241, R.1. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The obverse periphery is attractively toned in shades of deep original gold and blue, providing a nice cameo look to Liberty. The reverse is especially bright and lustrous, offering light to medium gold toning at the rims. Obverse Die. The obverse has a wide space between the 8 and 0 in the date, and the 2 is farther from the bust than on the B-5, BB-242. The right foot of the T in LIBERTY is missing -- the quickest way to identify this obverse die. The obverse of the B-5, BB-242 has a perfect base of the T in LIBERTY. Reverse Die. The reverse die was first used for the 1801 B-2, BB-212. That same reverse die, showing a faint 13th arrow, was a "workhorse die" that struck numerous silver dollar varieties dated 1801, 1802/1, 1802, and 1803. The 1802 B-6, BB-241 die marriage was the third use of this die, which would be used to strike two more (known) die marriages, both dated 1803, before it was retired. Die State. This early die state is a perfect obverse and reverse with protruding spur on cloud 3 and small die flaws around ED in UNITED. Condition Census. The 2013 Silver Dollar Encyclopedia lists seven MS65 examples and 11 MS63 examples as Notable Specimens. Perhaps 60 to 70 Mint State examples of this variety survive, suggesting that there may have been a small hoard of these coins. Appearances. This specimen is illustrated as part of NGC's presentation of the Newman Collection at www.NGCCoin.com. Commentary. Only 41,650 silver dollars were struck during the calendar year of 1802. That number may include some dollars struck from dies dated 1801 or earlier. Many 1802-dated dollars were probably struck in 1803, and the actual mintage was likely higher than the recorded mintage for the year. Provenance. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R.
