1827 50C Square Base 2 MS64 NGC. O-145, R.5. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. The O-145 is a mid to high level R.5, recognized by a short die line protruding from the point of the bust and the recut C in the denomination. This sharply struck specimen sparkles with unbroken luster. The silver-gray toning is somewhat deeper at the rims. The few contact marks are insignificant. The Overton plate coin (third and fourth editions) graded AU58 by NGC in 1993. To our knowledge the Charles De Olden specimen, NGC MS61, is the only other Mint State specimen graded by any service. The Newman coin appears to be the finest known example of this established rarity by a large margin. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $3.00; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
