1842 50C Medium Date, Large Letters MS63 NGC. CAC. WB-106, VP-003. Ex: "Col." E.H.R. Green. Attractive silver-gray and green toning graces fields visited by light blue and gold highlights. There are only a few minor marks in the fields, and none seriously distract from this coin's pleasing appearance. The 8 in the date is recut west with a doubling evident to the east of the prominent 8. The upper loop of a third 8 shows faintly just right of the shield's point in the hemline of Liberty's gown. The reverse of this half dollar is one of two for this variety, and seen here is an early die state with only weak die cracks. Rare in Uncirculated grades, this is the third example of this die variety owned by Mr. Newman. NGC has certified only two examples labeled as the VP-003 variety, this is the finest graded, and it is also the NGC plate coin for this variety. A desirable variety for the specialist. Ex: "Colonel" E.H.R. Green; Green Estate; Partnership of Eric P. Newman / B.G. Johnson d.b.a. St. Louis Stamp & Coin Co.; Eric P. Newman @ $7.50; Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society.
