Mint Mark O
Description 1844-O 50C MS62 NGC. Repunched Second 4. WB-104, Die Pair WB-15, R.3. Although the 1844-O is a relatively common date, NGC has certified only 12 coins in this grade with only 16 in the top Mint State grades. This half dollar has silvery-gray toning with hints of amber and blue. There are a few abrasions in the coin's fields but none are noteworthy. The second 4 in the date is slightly repunched south with remnants of the first punching above. The reverse has severe die cracking around the legend and denomination with a cud forming in the dentils below the (H)A(LF). Both dies clashed as evident in the drapery below Liberty's elbow and in the shield's lower right. A very attractive, strongly struck, scarce die variety. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society. Realized $1,175.00 . Description courtesy of Heritage Auctions, ha.com.
